I will not be using citric acid because it was a pain to look for it at multiple stores and I always ended up empty handed. They are easily available online if you are interested. Cream of tartar is the best substitute and it works well. You can find it in the spice section in your grocery store.
You are going to need:
- 1 cup or 8oz baking soda
- 1/2 cup or 4oz cream of tartar ( you can use double the amount of citric acid)
- body safe liquid (water, tea water, honey, etc. I would start out with water first to test it out. You will not be using a lot of liquids)
Others:
- measuring cups
- bowls (depending on how many colors you re going to make)
- tray (for your bath bombs to dry on)
- tissue paper (speeds up drying time and optional)
- gloves (reduces the chances of your hands being dry and optional)
- whisk (optional)
- spray bottle (to limit the amount of liquids you put in and optional)
Optional for decoration:
- food coloring (adds color)
- body safe glitter
- loose eyeshadow or broken up eyeshadow
- sugar/baking sprinkles
- flower petals (dry or fresh but make sure you wash them first)
- body safe fragrant oils
- natural oils
Directions:
1) Place all your dry ingredients together in the bowl (baking soda and cream of tartar).
2)You can use your hands, gloves, whisk etc. the gloves and whisk prevents your hands from drying out. Mix the dry ingredients well. Get rid of any clumps by patting on them. Add your fragrant oils if you plan on adding any.
3) Slowly add your liquid into the mixture. Add a little at a time or the baking soda will react to the baking soda. Quickly mix the mixture until you get the right consistency. There is not a correct amount of liquid to add in since it depend where you live. The moisture around you will determine how much water you need. For example, if you live in a cold area then you wouldn't need as much water as you would in a desert.
4) If you think the mixture is ready then squeeze a small amount in your hands. If it breaks apart then it is not ready. Continue mixing the ingridents together to ensure that all the ingridents are mixed together properly. If needed add more water to the mixture.
5) The ingridents should stay together when you clump it in your hands. You are now ready to put them in the molds.
6) This is optional but I divided the mixture into four bowls to add color to each bowl with food coloring. You can skip this step if you do not want to use food coloring.
7) Add a few drops of food coloring. You can mix colors as well. I only used one drop of blue coloring because it was enough to get the color I want. Do not add too much food coloring because you do not want to stain your skin or your tub.
The result of one drop of food coloring to each bowl.
8) Slowly pack the ingridents in the mold. I added a little at a time to ensure that it would stay packed. You can add flowers, sprinkles, body glitter, etc. anytime you like. Fill you mold to the top with a flat surface. I will be uploading and writing a new blog about bath bomb ideas so stay tuned for that!
9) Slowly tap the top and sides of the mold until it loosens. Do not squeeze the mold because it will break the structure. Slowly lift up the mold if you think the ingridents are slipping out. If not then keep tapping the mold. If it keeps crumbling then it may be too try. Add a bit more liquid to the mix. If it is too damp then add a little bit more baking soda.
There you go! Your bath bombs should be intact in the mold shape.
10) Place your bath bomb on the tray (tissue paper is optional) and let it dry for about 24 hours before you store it in a container or wrap it as gifts.
For round molds, fill up the two ends of the mold and add a generous amount of loose ingridents on the top.
Quickly squeeze the two ends together as hard as you can. This will take some practice. Wipe off the excess ingridents on the side. If the shape keeps crumbling then it maybe that the mixture is too dry. Add a bot more liquid to the mix. If the mixture is too wet then add a little bit more baking soda.
Tap the top and sides of the molds. Do not squeeze. Slowly lift up the mold if you think that the bath bombs are in its shape.
Repeat the same step to the bottom mold.
There you go! A successful round bath bomb!
Again, let your bath bombs dry for about 24 hours in a dark place. You want to let the bath bombs dry in a place where there is not that much moisture. The bathroom is the worst place to let these bath bombs dry. After 24 hours, you can store these bath bombs in containers or wrap them up as gifts.
To use the bath bombs, fill up your tub with warm water. Once the water is turned off, place your bath bomb in the tub and watch it fizzle! You can't really see it in this photo but I'll include my youtube video down below. The results are towards the end.
Here is the true color. It is so pretty! I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I enjoyed making these bath bombs!
